Maharashtra is a state famous for its diverse mountains, panoramic beaches, defined by breathtaking scenery and a variety of museums, monuments and forts that witness India’s rich history. Maharashtra is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Maha’ which means great and ‘Rashtra’ which originally came from the Rashtrakuta dynasty.

Maharashtra has an intoxicating variety – the misty mountains, which are spread far, lush green forests, historic huge forts and sacred shrines. The state consists of about 350 forts. They define the glorious history of Maratha rulers. At a distance of 120 km from Pune, Shivneri Fort is another iconic fort which is famous for being the birthplace of Shivaji.

The state is home to some beautiful hill stations wrapped in greenery and providing breathtaking views of the panoramic surroundings. Major hill stations like Lonavala, Khandala, Panchgani, Mahabaleshwar, Jawahar and Toranmal are here.

Maharashtra has many museums for history lovers. Pune’s Tribal Museum, Mumbai’s Prince of Wales Museum and Jahangir Art Gallery are some of them. The Coin Museum in Nashik is a unique museum of its kind, which reflects the history of coinage in India.

Maharashtra has many ancient beaches. You can visit the plush beaches like Marine Drive Chowpatty in Mumbai. Velaneswar and Shrivardhan Harihareshwar beach is for adventure lovers who want to indulge in water sports.

Maharashtra is also a major religious center. There are many shrines there. The famous Kumbh Mela is held every three years in Nashik, while Mumbadevi Temple, one of the famous temples, is located in the city of Mumbai. The Kailash Temple in Aurangabad and the holy sites of Shirdi, Pandharpur and Bahubali are equally famous.
